It's midnight in Colorado Springs. If you were to walk its streets, you'd find the homes quiet and dark, its businesses closed for the night, and the U.S. Olympic Training Center locked up tight. But you'd probably notice that one building stands apart from the rest. Its windows are dark except for one. If you stand there long enough, you may see the silhouette of a man walk by.

His name is Tim Patterson and he's just finished his workout in the private gym that makes up the first floor of his offices. The founder of Testosterone magazine and Biotest Laboratories has been here all day and he'll be here for several hours to come. Everyone else has gone home, the distractions are gone, and the workout has cleared his mind.

On the screen of his Mac, e-mails have filled his inbox. Most go unanswered. Tim doesn't have time to talk about what he's doing. He's too busy doing it. Rumors have begun to fly in the industry. The whispering has started:

If you continue to watch through the window, you may see him pick up the phone and begin talking. Tonight he's on the phone with Bill Roberts, a brilliant chemist and perhaps the country's top expert in drug-delivery systems. Tim and Bill just had another one of their products tested by an independent lab and they broke all the rules of the supplement industry when they laid out the conditions.

Tim opens the file containing the lab results. The numbers are not just promising, they're staggering. They're almost too good, if such a thing is possible because they'll raise the eyebrow of the occasional skeptic. No matter, the results are bullet proof. They'll stand up to scrutiny from a tag-team of Nobel Prize chemists.

The Hard Way

Before we give you a peek into that file, we're going to tell you about a little scam, a little high-dollar numbers game. We want you to pay strict attention because it involves your money and your physique. It's an old scam, but still a favorite of most supplement manufacturers. It involves a trick used by many companies to make their products look better than they actually are. In fact, this little trick can make even a totally worthless supplement look like a powerful physique builder.

Here's how the boondoggle works. Gather up a small group of untrained individuals. Make sure you pick a bunch of total wimps who've never touched a barbell in their life and who wouldn't know a gram of protein from a gram of carbohydrate. Although it's really not that important, go ahead and give them the supplement you're pretending to test out.

Over the next few weeks, instruct the test subjects to start lifting weights. Tell them what to eat and if you have to, shove protein down their gullets and lock them in the gym. At the end of the testing period, measure how much muscle they've gained and how much fat they've lost. If you picked some real newbies, you should get some impressive (though largely false) numbers.

Now start a fancy ad campaign and tell the world how great your supplement worked on these individuals. Be careful not to mention the fact that they were untrained before the test. Instead, talk about how your magic super-supplement helped them build tons of muscle and lose fat:

Did the supplement actually increase growth or reduce fat? Can't any untrained person who finally hits the gym add muscle and lose fat regardless of what pills and powders he takes? Yeah, yeah, but that's not the point. The point is to swindle money from other unsuspecting newbies and sell your product to teenagers who don't know any better. The scam works great… well, as long as you don't have any ethics or something similar to get in the way.

Now, obviously, if you really want to test drive a supplement, you don't round up a bunch of untrained newbies who can get good results no matter what they use. In fact, if you really, really want to test your product, you give it to experienced weight trainers and athletes. If it works for these guys, it'll work for anybody!

But believe it or not, there's a level of challenge above even that. And to put it bluntly, no supplement company has the balls to go to that level. Here's how it would work: when choosing test subjects, you'd skip over the newbies and even the experienced athletes with years of weight training under their belts. Instead, you go right to the top of the food chain: steroid using bodybuilders!

These guys represent the toughest of all groups on which to test drive a legal supplement. They've been sticking needles full of drugs into their systems for years and spend so much time in the weight room they've got a cot in the back and pet names for the 150-pound dumbbells. Not only are their physiques very advanced, but many of them have taken themselves beyond even genetic limitations!

To top it all off, steroid users are the most skeptical bastards around when it comes to legal supplementation! They don't think any of it works! They'd much rather spend money on illegal drugs than supplements.

So why would any supplement company test its product on these guys? They'd have to be A) stupid, B) crazy, or C) stupid and crazy. But there's another possibility. They could be D) confident that their supplement would be powerful enough to give even this "untouchable" group fast results in muscle gain!

But who has the cajones to run a risky test like that? Who'd opt to do it the hard way? Answer: Tim Patterson and Bill Roberts (if you haven't already guessed.)

The "Forbidden" Test

Part of the idea was simple. Find a bunch of skeptical steroid users or former users and put them on a legal supplement. After eight weeks, gather their results and listen to what they had to say about it. To do this, we went to a couple of Internet steroid forums and asked for volunteers. We wanted veteran 'roid users who had experience using at least a full gram of illegal anabolics per week. (That's a pretty hefty amount!) Those who took part in the experiment were asked not to use steroids during the testing period, then they were mailed several bottles of the supplement and instructed to use the maximum recommended dosage for eight weeks.

The skeptics began squawking almost immediately:

"No legal supplement can do what steroids can do!"

"There's no reason to use a supplement you can buy at a store at the mall! Just get the real stuff from Mexico!"

"Bad idea, guys. A steroid user isn't going to get crap from a prohormone product. A newbie might, but not an experienced juicer!"

Despite a lot of juiced up bodybuilders getting their posing trunks in a twist, the experiment went forward anyway. If you haven't guessed already, the test subjects were sent eight week's worth of MAG-10, Biotest's revolutionary prohormone supplement. In case you've been living in a cave the past couple of years, this controversial product contains A1-E and 4-AD-EC — a "stack" of the two premier Class I and Class II androgens. But if you've been reading the newspaper over the last few months, then you know that this time it's true. Most prohormones are very likely going to be forced off the market. Bills have been introduced in both the House and the Senate that would effectively rip these supplements off the shelves and turn them into controlled substances. Is it fair? No. Is it right? No. Will removing a safe supplement like MAG-10 from the shelves cause many people to go back to using black-market steroids? Yes, most assuredly.

But we won't turn this article into a rant about "andro" legislation. Instead, we're just going to give it to you straight. We have insiders in Washington who tell us that, barring divine intervention, certain pro-steroid compounds are about to be given the death penalty. Weird Science

We're about to let you in on some stuff the public has never been made aware of. Why are we doing that? Because what goes on behind the scenes in Tim Patterson's surrealistic world of experiments and supplement design is just too damned cool to keep under wraps sometimes!

The first bit of insider info involves T-mag contributor and drug-delivery expert Bill Roberts. Talking to Bill Roberts, Tim's lab partner in the MAG-10 project, is an interesting experience. You're struck by several things at once. First, you realize this guy just might be the smartest chemist on the planet. Second, you realize that he's a really weird guy, but he's weird in a good way, in an eccentric and brilliant way, not a smelly-guy-on-the-street-talking-to-his-shoes kinda way.

Now, you probably don't know this, but when Bill came to work for Biotest, Tim Patterson told him to make out a "wish list." Bill did just that. There was one thing on that list Bill just had to have: his own laboratory. Knowing that a major component of the future of anabolic supplementation was locked inside Bill's head, Tim wrote the check and Bill built a full-fledged R & D lab! This is where the early work on MAG-10 was completed.

Bill, true to his gonzo, scientist roots, even experimented on himself, his cat, and a couple of his assistants in the beginning. Later, two major universities were brought in to analyze blood samples. The original MAG-10 formula, complete with a revolutionary liquid-delivery system, was born.

And to this day, Tim Patterson and Bill Roberts have kept the entire MAG-10 formula — all 56 versions — locked tightly up in their noggins. It's not because they plan it that way. It's just the way they work. These two guys — Bill a traditionally schooled chemist and Tim, almost more impressively, a self-taught chemist — push and banter each other to their intellectual limits, making adjustments on the fly that are too fast and frequent to document. Butt Kickin', but Bad Tastin'

MAG-10 began kicking butt as soon as it hit the market. It shot to the top of the sales charts and even convinced a few steroid users to ditch the black market drugs. The results were that good! But MAG-10 was not without its faults, and as Tim Patterson always says, "There's always room for improvement!"

Not long ago, there was a breakthrough in the pharmaceutical industry that quite literally revolutionized drug delivery. This radical technique greatly improved the oral bioavailability of drugs. In laymen's terms, it allowed a large amount of the drug to get into your system in a very small package. In short, it allowed more of the good stuff to be utilized by the body. It's called microemulsion technology and Tim and Bill wanted to get their hands on it.

There were several problems. For one, the process was cost prohibitive. On top of that, only one country had the technology and they wouldn't have allowed us to import and export prohormones, even if we shelled out the big bucks. So here was this incredible technology that would've greatly improved MAG-10 and we just couldn't use it… until now.

That's right, pharmaceutical microemulsion technology has arrived in the U.S. and Biotest has access to it! The process is now more affordable and we can legally "borrow" it from the drug companies!

What does this mean? Let's get to the point, then we'll give you some of the cool, sciencey details. It means that MAG-10 is now going to be available in capsules. Not only are all flavor and dosing problems solved, but (are you ready for this?), because of the higher bioavailability, the new MAG-10 will be 30% more powerful than the old liquid formula!

Think about it — the old MAG-10 kicked anabolic ass! Now the new MAG-10 is not only easier to take, it's going to be more potent!

And yes, even though the boys in Washington have their sights set on banning these types of supplements, for now at least, this suped-up version of MAG-10 will still contain both 4-AD-EC and A1-E!

The Nitty Gritty

The science behind microemulsion is both fascinating and complicated. To fully understand it, you'd need an advanced degree in chemistry and perhaps pharmacology. However, here's the Cliff's Notes version:

Efficient oral delivery requires that compounds transport to the cells of the GI tract from whatever form they're provided in. This requires passing through the mostly aqueous environment of the GI tract. For water-soluble compounds, like aspirin, this can be simple and efficient. Prohormones, however, are practically insoluble in water.

If provided as a powder, some of the prohormones will stay undissolved and remain in the particles of powder all the way through the GI tract. This amount is totally wasted. Some will succeed, though, in transferring to micelles formed in the GI tract as part of the natural process of digesting fats.

This gives them a chance to make their way to the cells. But even when this occurs it doesn't work very well, because the prohormones don't interface well with these micelles. Further, the large size of this sort of micelle allows only limited absorption of compounds other than the fats Nature intends them to deliver.

As a primitive improvement on powder, pre-dissolving prohormones in oil can provide some improvement, as there's an increase in the transfer to these natural micelles. However, much of it can actually precipitate back out to solid. Additionally, the interface problem still isn't solved, and the micelle size again remains far too large for absorption of this type of compound.

In contrast, when a self-microemulsifying formulation is added to water or released into the GI tract it transfers all of the contained prohormones into nanometer-scale (millionth of a millimeter) micelles that offer dramatically improved absorption. These micelles are so small that they actually appear transparent in solution!

This happens independent of the fat-digestive process as well, releasing all of the prohormones into these nano-scale micelles regardless of whether taken on an empty stomach or with a meal. The bioavailability is always maximized.

Another aspect of an optimized self-microemulsion formula is that it can deliver remarkable amounts of compounds in a very limited volume. In the case of MAG-10, what was previously a 9-mL dose in liquid form is now super-concentrated to about 4.6 mL.

Not only does this technology allow us to get the full power of MAG-10 into capsules, it's also makes the 4-AD-EC component substantially more bioavailable than before!

The bioavailability of the A1-E part of the old liquid MAG-10 formula was already over the top, but the 4-AD-EC part could've used some improvement. Well, thanks to microemulsion, that's now been achieved. Now, more 4-AD-EC can be driven into your system than ever before! Not only that, the A1-E component, which was already super-bioavailable, also received a significant boost. The result: an anabolic nuclear bomb packed into convenient, easy to swallow capsules.

Here's a peek at how all this works. You can't just take a liquid and stick it into a capsule. The capsule would dissolve before it dropped into the bottle, even if there's only 4% water in the formula. In fact, even when using certain oils, you have to use a specific pH or you just get total capsule meltdown.

With the MAG-10 microemulsion, we heat and bring the active ingredients into a full solution and fill the capsules while still warm. As the mixture cools to room temperature, it forms these extraordinarily fine, needle-like crystals inside a highly concentrated solution.

When you swallow one of these capsules, the contents warm up because of your body temperature and become, once again, this super concentrated self-microemulsifying formula. Then the capsule releases its contents and BAM!… you're soon infused with the powerful anabolic cocktail of MAG-10 with near-injection levels of bioavailability!

Sounds simple, but in fact the formulation required a highly precise surfactant/cosurfactant mixture. Changing proportions by even 5% in any direction resulted in partial or even total loss of microemulsifying properties. Nope, you have to hit a certain, exact "sweet spot."

Further, it wouldn't have worked to simply copy any existing pharmaceutical microemulsion formula, as many companies would have done: no pre-existing pharmaceutical formulation could deliver anywhere near the amount of 4-AD-EC and A1-E per capsule delivered by the new MAG-10.

Cool, huh? And it's never been done in the supplement world. Never before have you been able to get this much stuff into your system! In fact, this wasn't even possible until a few months ago!

Beware the Copycats!

Just a quick word of caution. This new technology is going to be the hottest thing to hit sports supplements in a long time and there's going to be a lot of poseurs trying to cash in. We'll tell you right now how they're going to do it.

First of all, not very many people in the world have the ability to formulate a microemulsion of this caliber, and nobody else in the supplement industry can. And even if they do supply a liquid capsule, instead of using the expensive and cutting-edge microemulsion technology that's in MAG-10, they'll simply mix their supplements into vegetable oil and stick it into a hard capsule. It'd be like sticking the body of a Lamborghini on the chassis of a Ford Taurus and calling it a sports car.

Another option they might use is to just copy the names of our formulation ingredients and slap them on the label. They obviously won't have the correct proportions or the same technology. Only MAG-10 is going to be using the real deal!
