Each Natrol Pure Citrimax
capsule contains 250 mg of Citrimax brand of hydroxycitric acid (HCA) from
500 mg of standardized garcinia cambogia.
Citrimax works by inhibiting fat creation (lipogenesis) where the body
normally converts carbohydrates to fat. When you eat carbohydrates, they
are digested into glucose (blood sugar) to be used as energy. Glucose
molecules not immediately needed for energy are stored - either in muscle tissue
as glycogen or in fat cells. Muscle tissue can only hold a limited amount
of glycogen, the rest must be stored as fat - when you consume too many
carbohydrates. The enzyme needed to convert glucose to fat is
called ATP-citrate-lyase.
Citrimax is a competitive inhibitor of this enzyme ATP-citrate-lyase.
This enzyme converts citrate to Acetyl-CoA, which is the last carbon source
necessary for fatty acid synthesis. The enzyme is also important in maintaining
that Acetyl-CoA pool necessary for fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis,
especially during high lipid producing states induced by high carbohydrate
feeding. Inhibition of this enzyme eliminates the 2 carbon source used
for manufacturing fatty acids and cholesterol. In animal studies, administration
of HCA (Citrimax) caused lower food intake. This may be due to the liver reducing
the conversion of carbohydrates and fatty acids to fat, and instead making
them available for hepatic glycogen stores. This may also be the mechanism
for observed appetite suppression in animals.
