Each Natrol Folic Acid
tablet contains 400 mcg of folic acid. 100 tablets per bottle.
Folic acid (or folate) is a B vitamin found mainly in green leafy vegetables,
beans, asparagus, citrus fruits and juices, whole grain foods and liver.
However, it is difficult to get enough folic acid through diet alone.
You can make up the difference by taking a multivitamin or folic acid supplement.
If you are a woman in your reproductive years, it is especially
important that you get adequate folic acid. Folic acid is important
if you may soon become pregnant or you are in the early weeks of pregnancy.
It can help protect your baby against birth defects of the spine and brain,
like spina bifida, or "open spine". You and your baby need folic acid
most during the period that starts one month before you conceive through
the early months of the pregnancy.
Folic acid's potential to reduce the risk of neural tube defects is
so important that the Food and Drug Administration is requiring
that by 1998, food manufacturers fortify enriched grain products
with folic acid. This will give women another way to get
sufficient folate: by eating fortified breads and other grains.
Nutrition information on food and dietary supplement labels
can help women determine whether they are getting enough
folic acid, which is 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) a day before
pregnancy and 800 micrograms a day during pregnancy.
You should not take more than 1000 mcg. daily unless instructed by your doctor.
