Costa Rican coffee has a long and storied history. Coffee was
introduced to Costa Rica in the 18th century. The first few years
were difficult but the coffee survived.
Gradually with perserverance and much hard work coffee production
expanded throughout the Highlands of the Cental Valley. The demands for
coffee production soon led to the coffee fraternities,
both large and small, to come together and form what would become
the first coffee industry in Latin America. In the year 1820, the first
harvest of Costa Rican coffee was exported to Columbia.
Coffee soon became the "Golden Grain of Costa Rica" and led directly
to the building of the first route to the Atlantic Ocean in 1890. From
that time forward Costa Ricans have looked with pride
upon their coffee and their coffee industry.
