Stevia Extract
Traditionally, Stevia leaf has been known by the indigenous Indians in
the forests of Paraguay as the "honey" leaf. Stevia has also been incorporated
into many Indian traditional healing and dietary practices. Nature's Way
Stevia comes from plantations maintained by the Guarani Indians in
Paraguay, who cultivate some of the best tasting whole leaf Stevia available.
The Stevia leaf contains a compound, stevioside,
which is two hundred or more times sweeter than sugar.
It is used throughout the world, particularly in Japan, as a noncaloric sweetener. It
has not been approved for this use in the United States, but many people are using it
that way. It is perfectly legal to buy in the U.S. as a dietary supplement, but apparently the FDA
just has not specifically approved it as an artificial sweetener for use in other products yet.
Dr. Barry Sears says "If you want to use an artificial sweetener, stevia is your best bet."
Dr. Julian Whitaker in Dr. Whitaker's Newsletter, December 1994, says "Recent clinical studies
have shown it can increase glucose tolerance and decrease blood
sugar levels. Of the two sweeteners (aspartame and stevia), stevia wins hands down for safety."
Robert C. Atkins, M. D. in Dr. Atkins Health Revelations Newsletter, April 1994, says
"Stevia has virtually no calories. It dissolves easily in water and mixes well with all other
sweeteners... I used it myself in delicious homemade ice cream that is extremely low in
carbohydrates."
